Changing minds and behaviours is the theme of this year’s Road Safety Week, which is from May 14 to 20.

Providing education around responsible road sharing is the focus of the Bermuda Road Safety Council during this month.

The public is invited to attend an event on Monday, May 15 at City Hall from 12pm to 2pm to mark the opening of Road Safety Week.

Dennis Lister, the council chairman, said: “For drivers, sharing the road begins with understanding that motorcyclists and cyclists have the same rights as you.

“As these vehicles are smaller and less visible, we encourage drivers to be extra cautious, give plenty of room when overtaking and always maintain your distance.

“As a motorcyclist or cyclist, it is crucial to follow the rules of the road. Even a little negligence can prove to be detrimental.

“With the lack of proper protection for crashes, motorcyclists and cyclists are more likely to sustain serious injuries or death if involved in a crash. These crashes can be avoided by learning how to share the road with other road users.

“With the high rate of accidents involving motorcyclists in Bermuda, the BRSC implores motorcyclists to slow down, avoid the third lane, take extra caution when overtaking and always give larger vehicles the space they need.”

The council also reminded road users to be cautious when approaching pedestrians and to never pass vehicles that are stopped at a cross walk as there may be people crossing whom they cannot see.

Mr Lister added: “It is important to share the road and drive safely all year round, and with the Bermuda Day Holiday approaching, the BRSC encourages the motoring public to drive with care and caution, slow down and don’t drink and drive.“
