Two concerts are in the works for next month to commemorate the passing of Queen Elizabeth II and the coronation of King Charles III.

The classical concerts will be performed by the Bermuda Chamber Choir and Orchestra with The Bermuda School of Music Youth Choir on June 9 and 10.

The programme features works by Mozart, Handel, Borodin, Verdi and Humperdinck for an “exciting and nostalgic sampling of the classics”.

The orchestra is being led by Kerry Haslam.

Marjorie Pettit, concert director, said she was inspired to acknowledge both the passing of Queen Elizabeth, and the coronation of King Charles with the concert programme, which includes Mozart’s Requiem in D minor and Zadok The Priest by Handel.

The programme says: “The Requiem in D minor was commissioned by a German aristocrat for a Requiem Mass in memory of his deceased wife and Mozart worked on it until the evening of his death. It stands as one of the great choral requiem masterpieces and is especially fitting in light of the Queen’s passing in September.

“Zadok The Priest was written by Handel for the coronation of King George II in 1727 and has been used at every British coronation since but the words of the piece were based on the biblical account of the anointing of Solomon by the priest Zadok and they have been used in English coronations since the 10th century.”

In addition to these works, Ms Pettit has also included in the programme some children’s choral highlights from the opera Hansel and Gretel.
