Dennis Wainwright, Giorgio Zanol, of Lindo’s, Gerard Bean, Gerry Swan and Judy Simons will be the major award winners when the second Sport Bermuda Magazine awards night is held at Ruth Seaton James Auditorium on Sunday at 4pm.Wainwright, who will celebrate his birthday that day, will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to three sports, cricket, football and bodybuilding over several decades. Last year, Wainwright went on the stage to pay tribute to his former Cup Match captain Calvin Symonds, also an outstanding footballer, when he received the Lifetime Achievement Award. Now he will be in the spotlight, along with athletes from 13 different sports. Zanol will receive the Allan Peacock Humanitarian Award, with Gerard Bean, a former Bermuda Football Association president, receiving the Dr EF Gordon Award. Swan, a former national athletics coach, will receive the WF “Chummy” Hayward Award and Judy Simons, the Bermuda Olympic Association president, the Dudley Eve Sports Administration Award. Football will be represented by Ralph Bean, Larry Hunt, Dave Waltham and Larry Darrell, while Leon Blakeney, Neville Darrell and Campbell Simons will receive awards for cricket. Last year’s awards were not as well attended as hoped as it clashed with a professional boxing card at Fairmont Southampton. Organiser Mark Jennings vowed to continue with the awards and, this year, will be honouring top athletes from the past 40 years. They include Coleridge Place, Vernal Davis and Sam Maybury in tennis, motocross trio Rudy Cann, John Edness and Otis Ingham and Mike Sharpe, Donna Raynor and Norbert Simons in track and field. Distance runners Jeff Payne, Gary Wilkinson and Leon Matthews will also be recognised as well as Roy Johnson and Teresa Perozzi in boxing; Delano Ingham in cycling, Damon Simons and the late Cal Lynch in powerboating and Quinton Ming, Rose Hart and Patricia Gordon Pamplin for softball. Those receiving awards for their dedication to golf include Kevin Benevides, Brian Morris and Dwayne Gibson, while Eugene Raynor and Llewellyn Hollis are being recognised for sports fishing. “I’m happy to report that Nikki Bascome’s fight is on January 18, a long way away,” Jennings said. “Last year, we clashed with boxing and only had about 300 people.“This year, we want to get some young people out so they can learn who the heroes are, as I’m sure they’ve heard their names. The theme of the awards is, ‘Where are they Now’.” Tickets priced at $50 are available at Lindo’s in Devonshire and Warwick, Pro Shop on Reid Street and the 24-hour Esso City Mart. This year’s event is under the patronage of Alex Scott, the former premier, while cricket commentary pair Allen Richardson and Wendell Smith will be the hosts with comedian Bootsy the MC for the evening. Colin Zuill, Lawrence Trott and Elmore Warren will receive media awards while Radell Tankard will be presented with a community service award along with Danny Griffin and Clarence Smith.
