Nahki Wells hails Bristol City’s stunning FA Cup upset over West Ham
Nahki Wells says he is thrilled to have played a part in Bristol City’s stunning upset over Premier Division West Ham in an FA Cup third-round replay at Ashton Gate on Tuesday.
City won 1-0 thanks to a goal from forward Tommy Conway, who intercepted a sloppy back-pass and slotted home the winner in the third minute of the match.
West Ham’s fortunes then took a turn for the worse after they were reduced to ten men early in the second half when winger Saïd Benrahma was sent off for kicking out at City midfielder Joe Williams in the wake of being fouled.
“It was a great result and a great occasion,” an elated Wells told The Royal Gazette. “I’m happy to have played a part in such a monumental fixture for us and get into the next round
“It was a great occasion. There were 25,000 fans, a great atmosphere and a great performance from the lads.
“From my perspective, I’m happy to have played a part and happy to have had a good run-out. I came on in the 61st minute, so I had a nice little run and felt like I made a good impact for the side.”
Wells had a shot saved, steered Sam Bell’s cross wide and blasted another effort from distance over the bar as City made their numerical advantage count.
“I’m disappointed not to have pinched a goal,” he said. “I had a few efforts and thought my first effort I could have maybe picked out the far corner a bit better.
“I just went with power; it was an adrenalin rush. It was my first touch in the game and I maybe snatched at it. I could have been a bit more composed and picked out a corner, but I hit the target and made him [West Ham goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski] make a save.
“I had another two efforts in the game and created another couple of chances. So I did have a big impact in the game and I was happy with my performance and my output in the game.”
Wells also featured as a substitute after replacing Conway in the 81st minute in the initial cup-tie, which ended 1-1 at West Ham’s London Stadium on January 6, and City manager Liam Manning was delighted with his team’s famous win.
“At times it was challenging, we had to stay calm and keep our emotions in check which wasn't easy, but I thought we did a terrific job with that," he told Bristol World.
“It was phenomenal, a special memory for me, a special memory for the players and the club. It's a terrific evening and one I won't forget."
City will now face Nottingham Forest at home in the fourth round on January 26.
Wells hopes he and his team-mates can carry their impressive cup form into the Sky Bet Championship, where they have not enjoyed the best of times lately in their push for promotion.
“Hopefully that result can get our season up and running again,” he said.
“It’s been a disappointing last few fixtures in the league. After getting so close to the play-off, we kind of dipped off a bit.
“We are back at the Gate on Saturday against Watford and if we can take that form and that momentum from that fixture into Saturday, as we beat Watford three weeks ago 4-1 down at their place, we can take huge confidence into that game.
“So I’m really looking forward to the weekend and hopefully I can get another good run out and again look to make an impact when I come on if I don’t start. I want to try and get a goal to get my season back up and running.
“I do feel fully fit now, so I am trying to take the positives from that.”
