Special days dedicated to Autism Awareness Month

A string of events has been planned to mark Autism Awareness Month in April, a charity dedicated to supporting people with the condition said.

Tomorrow’s Voices, an autism early intervention centre, said the schedule will offer opportunities to raise awareness and funds.

The charity encouraged residents to wear blue on World Autism Awareness Day, or Light It Up Blue Day, today, April 2.

It added: “Take a picture decked out in blue and tag us @tomorrowsvoices.

“Tomorrow’s Voices is incredibly grateful to Gibbons Company, who will be holding a special charity day on Thursday in honour of Tomorrow’s Voices.

“Donate a minimum of $5 and receive 20 per cent off store-wide on that day.”

Buckets will be available across the island on Friday for the charity’s twelfth annual Tags It tag day or donations can also be made through the Tomorrow’s Voices website.

The charity said: “We are also thankful to Terceira’s Group of Companies for hosting donation buckets at all four of their locations for the month of April.

“Just a $20 donation will provide one hour of therapy for a client on the autism spectrum.

“Along with providing fundraising opportunities, the charity is also raising awareness about autism in the community.

“On April 9, the charity will host the ‘Building Bridges Workshop and panel discussion’.

“This special Autism Awareness Month workshop will cover sensitive language, creating opportunities for engagement and key considerations to promote inclusivity.

“The panel discussion will feature family members sharing their personal experiences and advice, offering a heartfelt perspective on fostering understanding and connection.”

The event will be held at the Tomorrow’s Voices headquarters at TN Tatem and is free unless attendance is to acquire professional development hours, which will mean a $20 fee. Limited registration is available through the charity’s website.

Wacky socks are called for on April 11 to mark Autism Rocks Socks.

On April 12, members of the Tomorrow’s Voices social skills group will take part in a special community giveback event.

The charity said: “This year, they will be creating ‘Tea Party in a Basket’ packages to donate to a local seniors rest home.

“These baskets will include tea and snack items, as well as handmade cards and small tokens crafted by our participants.

“If the community would like to donate, they can drop items to our headquarters at the TN Tatem facility by April 11.”

It added: “Tomorrow’s Voices is the only charity in Bermuda that provides one to one clinically recommended therapy based on applied behaviour analysis.

“For the last 17 years the charity has subsidised up to 80 per cent of clients’ fees, so families can access these much needed services at a nominal cost.

“Every dollar raised and donated goes towards providing ABA therapy services for individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities.”
