Repair work on Government House continues

Scaffolding has surrounded Government House as work to repair and renovate the historic Langton Hill building continues.

The House of Assembly heard in 2022 that the 19th-century building suffered from extensive water damage because of leaking roofs and faulty windows.

However, major repairs were deferred owing to a lack of cash.

It was announced in 2023 that Rena Lalgie, the Governor then, was forced to move out of the residence because the structure had been deemed unsafe and not fit to live in.

At the time, it was said the structure’s roof and windows needed to be replaced or repaired and the full remediation was expected to take three to five years.

The residence, originally built in 1892, has more than 30 rooms, including a large drawing room and dining room for formal entertaining, both of which open on to a long enclosed glass sun terrace overlooking the pool.
