Bermuda women’s hockey team went one better than the men by winning their opening game of the Central American and Caribbean Games qualifying tournament.

While the men’s national team came away with a brilliant 2-2 draw against Mexico, the highest-ranked squad in the tournament in their opening group match, the women defeated Guatemala 2-0 in the opening game of their campaign.

Bermuda’s goals both came in the third quarter through Georgia Harris and a penalty corner through Jessica Hollis to give the women’s side the perfect start to the tournament.

Also in the women’s tournament on Sunday, Puerto Rico beat Panama 6-0, with Mexico beating Venezuela 4-0 on Saturday. Bermuda are next in action on Monday against host nation Mexico, with the match starting at 7pm Bermuda time.

The men could not pick up more points on Sunday after losing 1-0 to Guatemala, who scored the only goal in the game with just nine minutes remaining through Brian Cardona.

In their opening match on Saturday, Bermuda’s Hemijah Bean scored an equaliser with just 20 seconds to go against Mexico to earn a huge point.

Bean scored from a well-worked short-corner routine to tie the match at 2-2.

Bermuda, who are ranked a massive 60 places lower than Mexico in the world rankings, fell behind seven minutes into the second quarter to a goal from Yael Gonzalez before Jordache Rawson pulled the men in pink level.

The parity did not last long with Mexico going ahead again almost immediately and although Bermuda had to survive periods of going down to ten men after Alexander Godet and Gareth Tavares both received green cards, they stayed in the game despite conceding plenty of penalty corners.

With time running out and the Bermuda pressure building a penalty corner was played to the edge of the circle and after a couple of quick passes, Bean powered the ball into the net to earn a point.
