Stricken container ship still adrift off Bermuda

A container ship that lost power after an engine-room explosion is still adrift more than 100 miles off the coast of Bermuda.

The Maersk Sana was travelling from Newark to Singapore when the explosion happened on April 28.

Two injured crewmen were transported to Bermuda and taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital. One was later released but the second, who suffered serious burns, was airlifted to the United States for further treatment.

Last night, a Maersk spokeswoman said that the vessel “continues to drift safely at sea off the coast of Bermuda”.

She added that the injured crewman was still in hospital in a critical but stable condition.

She said: “A tugboat is en route to the vessel, with an expected arrival in the next several days.

“Upon arrival, the tug will connect to the vessel and commence a towing operation to a port of refuge in the Bahamas, with an expected arrival in the last week of May.

“Our monitoring teams continue to track weather developments and operational progress to ensure safe and efficient handling throughout this operation. The crew member who was transported to a hospital in the US remains in stable but critical condition and is receiving the best possible care.

“As we always do in such cases, we have initiated an investigation into the incident, which is ongoing, and we are in close dialogue with the relevant stakeholders. While the investigation is ongoing, we cannot go into further details about the incident.

“Safety is of paramount importance and will be an important part of our investigation. We remain in communication with our customers about mitigating impacts to their supply chains.”
