The Government recognised crew members from three vessels who responded to a boat fire in Hamilton Harbour last month.

Crews from the ferries Resolute and Warbaby Fox, and the tugboat Powerful, as well as the Aids to Navigation team, received the September Public Service Excellence Award.

The ferry and tug crews worked to rescue people on the Hakuna Matata and extinguish a fire on the vessel on September 11, while the Aids to Navigation team promptly deployed environmental protection equipment around the disabled boat, which eventually sank near Saltus Island.

A government statement said: “Working within the main shipping channel, the teams helped protect lives and manage a serious maritime incident, reflecting the importance of preparedness and co-operation in delivering essential maritime services.

“The co-ordinated response demonstrated sound judgment, effective teamwork and a strong commitment to safety.”

David Burt said: “Public officers often work out of the spotlight but their swift response to this vessel fire showed why Bermuda is fortunate to have such dedicated people serving our community.”

The Premier highlighted that “crews and teams brought people to safety, fought the fire and took steps to protect our marine environment”.

“They responded quickly and worked together to bring the situation under control. We see that same commitment from public officers across the Government whenever our communities face challenges.”
