‘Zero information’ about location of missing Bermudian

The search for a young Bermudian reported missing in California has been scaled back, officials have announced.

Tony Botti, public information officer for the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office, said on Tuesday that they still had “zero information” about where Tiffany Slaton was, or whether anything has happened to her.

“We are being very transparent, we are putting out all the information we can,” he said. “We are trying to get people to put their eyes and ears out in the community or view any surveillance video they have in the Shaver Lake area.”

Ms Slaton, who represented the island at archery in 2017, was last known to be camping alone in the Huntington Lake area of the Sierra Nevada mountains on April 20.

Mr Botti said that the 27-year-old had met with an archery student, but had not been heard from since.

“Her family had not heard from her in a while,” he said. “I believe they gave it some time to let it play out, figured maybe she was in an area where she didn’t have cell coverage, and it was on April 29 that her family reported her missing.”

Mr Botti said that once the report was made, deputies were sent into the mountain area to look for her, and on May 6, a full search-and-rescue team was dispatched.

“We had anywhere from 25 to maybe close to 50 people out in the field at the same time,” he said. “That is a mixture of deputies and volunteers.

“They worked all day and even into the evening Tuesday through Saturday. They ultimately scaled back the active search on Saturday evening.”

Mr Botti said that close to 600 square miles had been searched, but no clues about Ms Slaton’s whereabouts were found.

“We are still searching for Tiffany Slaton, but just in a more scaled-back mode,” he said. “We are entertaining any information the public has, any leads.

“Of course, if we get any information that points to more of a direction of where she might be, we will sent more resources, more people in that direction to look for her.”

Mr Botti said that the sheriff’s office was “very familiar” with the area after conducting numerous annual search-and-rescue operations there.

“That’s why it is very odd to us that we are very familiar with this territory and did such an expansive search,” he said.

“To not even come up with clothing, a tent, a bike, a discarded food wrapper, an orange peel. All of these things you would think that if Tiffany had those and maybe if she was in distress she would maybe leave a clue, we have not come across it.”

Mr Botti said that it was “troubling” that so much time had passed since her last sighting, particularly given the rugged terrain, limited phone coverage, wild animals and weather conditions.

“It’s difficult to navigate those elements for very experienced people,” he said. “To go off the grid for three weeks is extremely troubling, and that is why we are hoping that people out there will continue to keep her in their minds and keep looking for her.”

The Fresno sheriff’s office has asked anyone with any information on Ms Slaton’s whereabouts to call (559) 600-3111 “immediately”.
