Sebastian Kempe and Adriana Penruddocke finally race in China
Sebastian Kempe and Adriana Penruddocke finally got their campaigns started at the ILCA World Championships on the penultimate day of the regatta in Qingdao, China.
After enduring a frustrating four days of postponements as a result of light winds and fog, the ILCA 7 men’s and ILCA 6 women’s fleets managed to race at the Qingdao Olympic Sailing Centre.
Kempe posted scores of 37th and 26th in the opening two races in the ILCA men’s Blue fleet and presently sits 99th in the 137-strong division.
The former youth world champion got off to good starts in both races and at certain stages was in the top ten but he lost precious ground being on the wrong side of persistent wind shifts, which kept the racing fleet guessing.
Penruddocke, who represented Bermuda at the Olympics in Paris last year, posted a 17-38-22 record in the three races contested by the ILCA 6 women’s Blue fleet to come ashore 51st of the 99 competitors in her division.
Due to lost time, the men’s and women’s series will now consist only of the qualifying races with no final series or medal race.
The ILCA 7 men’s fleet must complete another two races to constitute a world championship and the ILCA 6 women’s fleet one heading into the final day of competition.
World champion Finley Dickinson, of Great Britain, and German Ole Schweckendiek are tied at the top of the ILCA 7 men’s leaderboard with five points. Pavlos Kontides, of Cyprus, sits in third, a farther three points adrift of the leaders.
Two-times European champion Agata Barwinska, of Poland, holds a three -point advantage over France’s Louise Cervera at the top of the ILCA 6 women’s leaderboard. Wiktoria Golebiowska, also of Poland, sits in third a farther five points off the lead pace.
A total of 237 of the world's best sailors from 40 nations are competing at the regatta.
