A 55-year-old man has been identified as the individual who succumbed to his injuries after an industrial accident at the Fairmont Southampton Hotel in April.

Thomas Lauwaske Jones, a father of three, was taken by ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital along with another worker after sustaining serious injuries in an electrical accident at the hotel premises on April 13.

One of the men was placed in intensive care and a police spokesman said at the time that the other man had been treated for his injuries and discharged from the hospital.

Karim Alibhai, the founder and principal of Gencom, said: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of Thomas Jones.

“This is a devastating loss. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to Thomas’s family, friends and everyone who knew and worked with him.”

The hotel declined to comment further on the investigation into the incident, which is still in progress.

Mr Jones had served as the Bermuda Industrial Union’s representative at the hotel.

Shelly Leman, the managing director of Belco, said at the time of the incident that the company received notification of an outage at the property at about 10.40am on the day in question.

She said that on arrival, Belco crews were informed that there had been an accident involving a contractor working on the hotel’s internal electrical network, and that workers at the site had sustained injuries.

Belco crews isolated the hotel’s network from the substation and provided technical resources to support the hotel and police with their investigations.
