A Bermuda Half-Marathon Derby rematch took place around the streets of St George’s on Sunday as Gayle Lindsay and Christine Dailey went head to head in the Race For Memories 5k.

The winner and runner-up on the island’s big day last month took each other on from the start at East End Primary School and their duel was strong enough to distance the men, with the two fighting out the overall finish.

It was Lindsay who again came out on top, completing the course in 18min 36sec, with Dailey chasing her home in 18:48. Talented youngster Naomi MacGuiness took third place in the women’s race, and sixth overall, when crossing the line in 19:14, with Stepanka Sprincova (20:48) and Melissa Logie (22:33) rounding out the top five in the women’s race.

While he had to give best to Lindsay and Dailey in the overall competition, John Carreiro was the first man to finish in 19:05. There was a tight finish for the runner-up spot with Marquis Burgess just given the nod for second despite being given the same time as third-placed finisher Joe Barrowclough (19:13).

Rupert Cuddon-Large (19:29) and Nathan Foster Skelton (20:08) completed the top-five male finishers.

The 5K competitive walk was won by Sam Booth (32:55), who beat Junior Watts (37:43) and Nancy Andrews-Sousa (38:11).

The race was held to raise funds for Dementia Bermuda, which was founded in 2012 to give much needed support to people living with dementia in Bermuda, along with their families and caregivers.

More than 50 million people live with dementia, including an estimated 2,500 in Bermuda.
