Accused murders and street robbers appear in court

Two men accused of murdering newlywed James Lawes denied the charges when they appeared at Supreme Court yesterday.David Cox, 33, and Devon Hewey, 24, are alleged to have shot Mr Lawes dead as he stood in front of an alleyway next to Place’s Place bar in Hamilton on March 19, 2010.Two other men, Maurice Martin and Robin Stovell, were injured.Mr Cox and Mr Hewey are charged with attempting to murder the injured men, but deny those allegations too.While Mr Hewey entered not guilty pleas when he appeared before Puisne Judge Carlisle Greaves, Mr Cox remained mute.After checking with defence lawyer Larry Mussenden that the defendant “has not lost his tongue” the judge took the silence as the equivalent of a not guilty plea.The pair will stand trial in April.Also appearing during the monthly arraignment session at Supreme Court yesterday were three teenagers and a young man accused of violently robbing a father in front of his children over the Cup Match holiday.Kyle Daniels-Smith, Sanchea Douglas and Judah Roberts, all 17, and Sergio Robinson-Woolridge, 23, deny attacking victim Kevin Abrahams on Rambling Lane, Pembroke, on August 4. Their trial date was set for December 3.A 14-year-old boy is also facing the same charges at Family Court. He cannot be identified but has already entered a not guilty plea. His trial date has not been fixed.Top distance runner and anticonscription activist Lamont Marshall pleaded not guilty to charges of causing grievous bodily harm to a couple through impaired driving.Mr Marshall is alleged to have seriously hurt motorcycle rider Ian Scotton, 25, from Warwick and his pillion passenger Carly Lima, 27, from Sandys.According to police, the collision took place at 1.09am on Monday, August 13, at the junction of Middle Road and South Road in Paget.Mr Marshall also denied a further charge of refusing to provide a breath sample.His trial date was set for February 11.
