Island Games athletes to benefit from golf tournament
Part of the proceeds from this summer’s Atlantic International Junior Championship Alumni Reunion will go towards supporting Bermuda’s Island Games athletes.
The 54-hole golf tournament will take place at Port Royal Golf Course, Belmont Hills and for the first time at Mid Ocean Club from August 11 to 14 and will again feature players from the United Kingdom, United States, Canada and Bermuda.
“In addition to rekindling past memories and battling for bragging rights, participants will once again be playing for a worthy cause as any remaining proceeds will support the Bermuda Island Games Association,” said Scott Roy, top local professional, Turtle Hill Golf Club director and AIJC alumni.
The biennial event will showcase players who honed their skills competing on the former Atlantic International Junior Championship from the late 1970s to early 1990s who went on to play professionally in various overseas Tours, including the Korn Ferry Tour and LPGA.
Among those already confirmed are past champions Christine Decarie and Murray McCrossin, of Canada, Nic Mansell, of the United Kingdom, Ken Siegfried, of the United States, and local duo Geoff Blee and Jon Ingham.
The 2023 edition also attracted accomplished players from the UK, US, Canada and Bermuda and was well received by many who plan to return this year.
“It was exciting to hear how much of an impact the AIJC had not only for Bermuda, but for the juniors who visited Bermuda to play in the event,” Roy said.
“To be able to keep in contact and nurture those friendships for many years afterwards proves the positive impacts of golf, not only for competitive fun sports but for the social dynamic as well. I look forward to seeing everyone again this year.”
The event will again feature a mix of four-ball formats, team competition and individual prizes on the final day.
The committee hope more locals will participate in this year’s event and have encouraged Bermudian alumni who are not competing to attend the social events, which will include a Monday night beach barbecue at The Reefs, a Wednesday night cruise on the Uber Vida and a closing dinner on Thursday night at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club.
The deadline for alumni registration is July 30.
