Sienna Mosquera broadens experience at Pinehurst

Sienna Mosquera

Sienna Mosquera has chalked up her debut at this week’s Junior North & South Amateur Championship in Pinehurst, North Carolina, as a “wonderful experience”.

The Mike Bender Golf Academy student finished tied for 58th at 25-over 241 among a field of 78 at the iconic venue.

“It was a great tournament to be a part of; the courses were beautiful and I had fun playing them,” Mosquera told The Royal Gazette.

“The greens at Pinehurst were challenging and the courses themselves, but in a good way as they tested all different parts of my game, which helps me know what I need to work on and plan out for my next tournament.

“Overall it was a wonderful experience and I appreciate the support from the Bermuda Golf Association.

“I was really excited to have my university coach drive down to watch me play and I had great support from my family there as well.”

Mosquera carded her lowest score of 4-over 76 in the opening round of the 54-hole stroke play tournament.

American Makayla Grubb claimed the girls title by a comfortable five shots after signing off at 8-under 208.

Mosquera has already enjoyed success this year having won the Mission Inn Junior Open and Walt Disney Classic competing on the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour in Florida.

The promising golfer will now shift her focus to representing Bermuda at the Island Games to be held in Orkney from July 12 to 18.

“I am really excited for Island Games in less than two weeks and look forward to getting to my focused practices before heading off to that event with our Bermuda team,” Mosquera said.

Also flying Bermuda’s flag at this week’s Junior North & South Amateur Championship was Oliver Betschart, who was also making his debut at the event.

The 16-year-old finished tied for 50th at 11-over 225 and saved his best for last with an even-par 72, which included two birdies and two bogeys, in the final round at Pinehurst’s No 8 course.

American Davis Wotnosky secured boys honours by three-shots at 10-under 204.

Betschart has also enjoyed success this year competing both on home soil and abroad. He teamed up with the fellow amateur Jevon Roberts to win the Bermuda Four-Ball Championship at Port Royal Golf Course, which was followed up with victories at the Prestige Tour Hill Country Open in Texas, Cedarberry Bowl at Belmont Hills Golf Club and Gosling’s Moongate Tour at Tucker’s Point Golf Club.
