Daniel Phillips's magnificent run at the International Tennis Federation M15 tournament in Turkey ended in the quarter-final stage yesterday.

Phillips lost 6-1, 6-3 to No 1 seed Nino Ehrenschneider, of Germany. It was the farthest the Bermudian has progressed in an IFT senior tournament.

By winning the opening two rounds of the main draw in Turkey, Phillips earned his initial Association of Tennis Professionals singles points. The 20-year-old is the fourth Bermudian to become a professional, following in the footsteps of Stephen Alger, James Collieson and Trey Mallory, his Davis Cup team-mate.

Davis Cup captain Ricky Mallory praised Phillips for his exploits in Turkey. What pleased the Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association national tennis director is that when Bermuda take a shot at qualification for the Davis Cup World Group II early next year, the team will have two professionals in its ranks.

“As the national tennis director and Davis Cup coach, I am incredibly proud of Daniel’s achievements and his impressive run at the M15 tournament in Turkey,” Mallory said.

“I’ve emphasised to our Davis Cup players that, with us now fighting for World Group II, it’s crucial that they continue to compete in as many high-level matches as possible.

“Having two professional players, Daniel and Trey Mallory, on our Davis Cup team speaks volumes about their dedication to tennis and their commitment to representing Bermuda.

“These young men are showcasing their talents on the world stage. As I’ve highlighted before, and will continue to stress, for the BLTA to support these players in participating in pro tournaments and reaching the highest levels of the sport, significant funding will be essential.”

Meanwhile, the Highland Spring tournament concluded at Pomander Gate Tennis & Pickleball Club on Wednesday.

Isaac Metschnabel was the winner of the boys’ 10 and under title, while Allegra Boycott won the girls’ title.

Chloe McBrearty and Arianna Parra Delgado won the girls’ doubles 12 and under, with victory over Victoria Lines and Ashley Wakeford.

Landon Williams took the honours in the boys’ singles 12 and under. Parra Delgado was the winner of the girls for the same age group.

In the 14 and under, the title went to Hasan Khan for boys and Chloe McBrearty for girls. Chloe McBrearty and Isabella Neurerer won the doubles.

Michael Collins won the boys’ 16 with no girls’ champion crowned for the age division.

Nadhira Durham defeated McBrearty to win the girls 18 and under, while Zachary McGuire triumphed over Jadon Spriggs to secure the boys’ titles.
