City concerned over rise in public restroom vandalism
The Corporation of Hamilton has raised concerns over “a troubling rise in misuse and vandalism of public facilities” across the city
The municipality spoke out after a restroom at Albuoy’s Point was vandalised on Thursday. A toilet was smashed and walls were “significantly damaged”.
The facility will remain closed while repairs are carried out.
A corporation spokeswoman pointed out that public restrooms on Union Street remain closed after being damaged in March, and that restrooms on Victoria Street have also come under repeated attack by vandals.
Issues have included broken doors, locks, vanities, fixtures, lights and mirrors, as well as the repeated theft of paper towels toilet paper and soap. Three of the bathrooms were spray-painted with graffiti last week.
In addition to physical damage the spokeswoman said that corporation staff had witnessed “unsanitary behaviour”, including defecation outside of toilets, creating “an uninviting and unacceptable environment”.
The spokeswoman said: “We understand the importance of public restrooms, but they require proper care and co-operation from the community.
“Ongoing misuse presents a significant challenge. Vandalism not only results in costly repairs but also impacts the city’s ability to keep these essential facilities open for responsible users.
“In 2021, the Victoria Street bathrooms were upgraded with robust stainless-steel fixtures and industrial-strength fittings designed to withstand damage, yet we still find ourselves in this unfortunate position.
“We are asking the public to help us maintain these spaces so they remain accessible for everyone who needs them.”
The corporation urged residents and visitors to treat public facilities with respect, and to report any acts of vandalism or antisocial behaviour to the police by calling 211 or 911.
