Nahki Wells: Luton move makes perfect sense

Nahki Wells is excited and raring to begin another chapter in his career with new club Luton Town.

The Bermuda striker has joined the League One side after agreeing a two-year deal. He is hoping he can live up to the expectations they have placed on him as they seek an immediate return to the Sky Bet Championship next season.

“I am excited for the new chapter. Obviously I wasn't awarded a new contract at Bristol City so it left me in a position to have to look for new clubs and see what was best suited to myself,” Wells told The Royal Gazette.

“Luton were keen to get me on board quite early, which as a player is a good feeling. You know that they are pushing the boat out to get you and doing everything they can to get you.

“You feel valued and important. It gives you that sense of security that you are probably going to play a big role and for me that was a huge deciding factor.

“Hopefully I can have a really positive influence on and off the pitch and we can go on and have a really good season.”

The 35-year-old became a free agent after his contract with the Robins expired at the end of last month.

“I know I could've been a bit more patient and had Championship offers that may have been better options on paper, but I was very much happy to sign the two years at Luton and try and play a pivotal role and help get this club back up to the Championship. So delighted with how everything went,” he said.

During his career, Wells helped former clubs Bradford City and Huddersfield Town gain promotion and Luton are hoping he can help them do the same after suffering their second successive relegation in May.

“I am excited for the new challenge. First time in League One in quite a long time but it's a challenge that I will be relishing,” he said.

“Probably being one of the favourites to go up is a different feeling for myself.

“I haven't often had that or never had that. So there's going to be a different element of pressure and expectation.

“I am trying to take my form and consistency from last season to the next season and hopefully have a few more goals and add another promotion to my CV.”

Wells flew to Slovenia to meet his new team-mates on Wednesday and participate in their preseason training alongside fellow new signings Hakeem Odoffin and Nigel Lonwijk.

“I am just getting to know the group and spending some time with them. I am looking to have a strong pre-season and build relations with the players, management, staff and people at the club,” he said.

“Training is pretty much starting to kick in now so it's a new chapter for me and new beginnings having to go through that after being at Bristol City for 5½ years and being so settled.

“From a geographical standpoint there's going to be change in my personal life and my family but it's one that suits my playing career and my family's situation as well.

“I had to weigh up all the pros and cons and find what best aligned with my personal ambitions and my family life. This ticked all the boxes. Everything aligned with Luton and just made sense, so delighted and looking to get going.”

Luton fans could get their first glimpse of Wells in a friendly against Gillingham on July 19, with matches against Southend United on July 22 and Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur on July 26 also among their pre-season fixtures.

The Hatters will host AFC Wimbledon in their 2025-26 season opener at Kenilworth Road on August 1.
