Island’s juniors showcase their talents in the US
Some of the island’s top golf prospects put their skills to the test in the United States last week.
Sa-Qui Robinson, Cole Graham, Soutter Lachlan, Austin Frank and Bradford Laing flew the island’s flag at the Annual Mid Season Invitational at Reunion hosted by Reunion Golf Resort in Orlando, Florida.
The versatile Robinson, who also plays cricket for St George’s Cricket Club’s senior team, finished tied for 38th in the 71-strong boys 16-18 division at 17-over 233 at the 54-hole Hurricane Junior Golf Tour event.
Graham finished alone in 29th of the 34 players in the boys 14-15 division at 33-over 213 and Lachlan in 31st, a farther ten shots back.
Frank finished fourteenth of 16 in the boys 12-13 division after signing off at 27-over 207.
Making only his second appearance in an international event overseas, Saltus Grammar School student Laing missed out on a spot on the podium by three shots after finishing fourth among the field of six in the boys 10-11 division at 16-over 196.
American Vladimir Parker claimed the boys 16-18 title and Joseph Godefroy the boys 14-15 honours,=. Thailand’s Nakareth Pongpairoj was boys 12-13 champion and Korean Seunghun Hahn reigned supreme in the boys 10-11 division.
Bermuda was also represented by a trio of promising golfers at last week’s Junior World Golf Championships at the iconic Torrey Pines Golf Course in California.
Oliver Betschart was 71st in the 202 player field in the 15-18 division at 12-over 228 and Lewis MacFarlane tied for 122nd in the 166-strong boys 13-14 age group at 23-over 236.
Betschart’s sibling, Darina, also competed in the 54-hole event, finishing tied for 56th in the 101-strong girls 13-14 division
The 14-year-old had plenty of momentum heading into the tournament after claiming girls honours by three shots at this month’s Caribbean Amateur Junior Golf Championships in the Dominican Republic.
