Youngsters bring wonder to City Hall
Young actors took audiences at the Earl Cameron Theatre down the rabbit hole last night.
Myah Bridgewater, cofounder and acting director of Actin’ Up theatre camp, said 52 students between 9 and 15 years old are in the camp’s production of Alice in Wonderland.
She explained: “Our first camp in 2022, we did The Little Mermaid, which was a great entrance for the Bermuda community.
“We really wanted to make theatre accessible for Bermudians.
“We then did Matilda and Annie, which were more realistic, but then we were ready for something more magical and whimsical to help people escape to a new world.”
Campers rehearsed Alice and Wonderland for three weeks and performed for a sold-out crowd last night — the second and final show will begin at 1pm today.
Ms Bridgewater received a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts degree in acting from the University of Michigan this year.
Camp cofounder Sanzia Pearman has a degree in theatre from Spellman College and is pursuing a masters in arts and entertainment management at Pace University.
Ms Bridgewater said: “Ms Pearman and I wanted to bring the theatre professional experiences we’ve had abroad here to Bermuda’s youth.
“People should come and see what our campers have achieved within three weeks, a feat in itself, and skills they have learnt that are transferable to other fields.”
