The Ministry of Health has urged the public to celebrate the Cup Match festivities safely given the summer heat.

The ministry urged visitors and residents to wear sunscreen, stay hydrated and be careful when handling food while enjoying the holiday weekend.

Kim Wilson, the Minister of Health, said: “Cup Match is a time of joy and reflection for all of us. Whether you’re cheering from the stands, relaxing on the beach, or out on the water, be mindful of your health.”

Ms Wilson also urged the public to be wary of Covid-19, which continues to circulate on the island.

“I urge everyone to take sensible precautions, especially to safeguard our seniors and those with underlying health issues,” she said.

“If you're feeling under the weather, especially with cold or flu-like symptoms, please stay home to prevent the spread of illness.

“Wearing a mask in crowded indoor settings or when visiting loved ones can offer an extra layer of care for those who need it most. Wash your hands regularly with soap and water or use hand sanitiser and always cover coughs or sneezes with a tissue or your elbow.

“Let’s all do our part to keep Cup Match healthy and festive for everyone.”

A government spokeswoman recommended that those who are going out in the summer sun wear broad-spectrum sunscreen, wear lightweight protective clothing and try staying in the shade during peak UV hours.

“With the summer heat in full swing, it's essential to stay hydrated and nourished,” she said.

“Drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially if you're consuming alcohol or spending time in the sun and enjoy wholesome meals to maintain your energy levels. If drinking, do so in moderation and always plan for safe transportation — never drive under the influence.

“Be alert to signs of heat-related illness, such as dizziness or rapid heartbeat. If you feel unwell, take steps to cool down immediately.

“Practise safe food handling by keeping chilled items cool and being especially cautious with seafood and meats in warmer conditions. Wash your hands often and maintain good hygiene when preparing or serving food.”
