Scott Barnes promises to bounce back with victory
Karter Scott Barnes is hungry for his next event as he looks to make it back on to the top step of the podium.
Barnes finished third in the final round of the Skusa Pro Tour on Sunday, with the result meaning he also relinquished the championship at New Castle Motorsports Park in Indiana.
Used to dominating the Masters Division, Barnes is always seeking race wins and titles and he is determined to bounce back after a disappointing weekend.
“It’s the way the racing world works,” Barnes said.
“It’s a rollercoaster of emotions, ups and downs and you have to cope with the bad, but overall finishing third in the Pro tour and finishing on a high note is something I’m happy with.
“But when the weekend is over and you see the champion and not yourself lifting the winner’s trophy, it makes you hungry. I’m definitely disappointed but it has brought back my hunger and shows me that I still want the success.
“This is the highest level of karting you can race in the US and we would have loved to defend our title but a couple of mistakes here and there meant it didn’t line up that way this year.”
Given his business commitments, Barnes had not sat in a kart for two months before the weekend but refused to blame that for his performance.
“Before this weekend I hadn’t been in the kart for a couple of months and in racing terms that is a long time as the more seat time anyone gets the better,” Barnes said.
“But I was able to practice and I knew the track well, which was good. It takes a little while to shake the dust off but it wasn’t the biggest factor in performance.
“Knowing we had a huge points gap to make up I just went overly aggressive in the pre-final on Saturday. I tried to go too fast too early and made a stupid mistake, which cost us.
“I am mad at myself for making mistakes but each time we did we bounced back, so it was great that we were able to recover and make top three.”
Barnes does not have to wait too long this time for his next race, which brings happy memories as a ten-times winner
“In four weeks I’ll be racing in the Rock Island Grand Prix in Illinois,” Barnes said.
“I do it every year and it’s the biggest street race in the United States. I’ve won the race ten times and hopefully we’ll win that again and get out to the final round of the Stars series in September. I raced the first round but was unable to race rounds two and three because of work commitments.”
As ever Barnes is keen to thank the bankers that enable him to continue his racing career.
“Without Carlos Racing Engines and Maranello USA allowing me to be a part of the team and race for them, I wouldn’t be able to do this,” he said.
“Butterfield & Vallis, All Rise Ltd and Corey Simpson of Simpson Engines I also have to give a shout out to big time for their support.”
