Newly installed Dandy Town head coach Jarreau Hayward is taking his team’s Charity Cup clash with North Village at Bernard Park tomorrow night in stride.

Although he concedes it would be nice to start the season off by winning a trophy, Hayward is more focused on the process of achieving his team’s objectives over the longer haul.

“It's always nice to win silverware, but more importantly is the process and trusting it. Our focus is progress and it’s early days,” he told The Royal Gazette.

“We have had and continue to have a great preseason, so whatever happens we will continue to look forward and take the necessary steps.

“Our preparation has been great. The team is grasping the concepts, but again it’s early in our process.

“I’m really pleased with where we are mentally and footballing-wise. And, to put it in masonry terms, the team spirit is curing.”

Town, who won the Friendship Trophy last season, bolstered their ranks in the summer transfer window having secured several key players, including the likes of national team stalwart Lejaun Simmons, Quadir Maynard, Jahquil Hill and Yeferson Ibaraguen Ramirez.

“The club have done an amazing job in the transfer window. We have addressed the areas of the team and have an amazing foundation to build on,” Hayward said.

“The new players have gelled well and the old players have welcomed them in and shown the Dandy Town way. It's great to see and we are really excited for the future.”

Hayward said his team are pumped up for their clash against league and FA Cup champions Village in the traditional season-opener.

“The players are ready and our numbers have been awesome in training,” he said.

“North Village are always a challenge. Their team has lots of quality and are looking forward to the challenge.”

Village are hoping old habits die hard, having beaten Devonshire Cougars in the FA Cup final to complete the league and cup double.

“The team are up for it and want to continue on where they left off last season,” head coach Cal Dill Jr said. “But we have to stay humble and respect the game, and remember the game is played on the pitch and not on paper.

“Dandy Town are a very good team; I have loads of respect for that club.”

Like Hornets, Village also benefited from the summer transfer window, with former team players Pierre Smith and Jakeem Jennings among those joining the fold.

“We have brought in some new faces, but most have played for North Village before,” Dill said.

The Charity Cup will be an historic occasion for Village, who are hosting a match for the first time under floodlights at their Pembroke ground.

“It is very historic occasion for the club and also for the players. Most players playing now have learnt their footballing skills at this same venue,” Dill said.

Hayward added: “I am excited for North Village and the football community, and congratulations to their recently departed president [Shervin Dill] and the new president [DeVrae Tankard], executive committee and members.

“The investment in lights across the field is necessary for the evolution of our space as a country in the game, and we are looking forward to playing under their lights.”

Village and Town will square off at 8pm in the second match of a double-header, which also features a women’s all-star match that kicks off at 6pm.

Domestic football action continues on Monday with the launch of the Dudley Eve Trophy in a double-header at Goose Gosling Field.

St George’s Colts will lock horns with X-Roads Warriors in group C (6pm), followed by PHC Zebras against Devonshire Cougars (9pm) in group B.
