A series of events is planned as the Ministry of National Security joins communities around the world in observing September as National Recovery Month.

The observances this year are being held under the theme “Recovery is Real — Restoring Every Aspect of Life”.

A government spokesman said that the observances highlighted that recovery was not only possible but was a process of rebuilding health, purpose and connection.

The events include two public forums at Pathways Bermuda, on September 18 and 26.

Michael Weeks, the Minister of National Security, said: “Recovery Month is a vital opportunity to break down the stigma that too often surrounds substance use.

“Too many individuals and families in Bermuda have suffered in silence or shame but recovery is real and possible.

“Raising awareness is key in reminding our community that there is no shame in seeking help and every person in recovery deserves dignity, compassion and support.”

Mr Weeks hailed the efforts of the Department of National Drug Control and the Department of Corrections in their mandates to help people build new lives.

He added: “Recovery is not simply about abstaining from substances, it is about restoring every aspect of life — health, family, dignity and hope.

“I especially encourage struggling people to know that they are not alone and help is available.”

The DNDC has established a committee with representatives from various organisations to host community-focused events to celebrate Recovery Month.

They include the Bermuda Hospitals Board through its Turning Point programme; Focus Counselling and Transitional Living; the Salvation Army through its Harbour Light programme; Pathways, the Right Living House which is operated by the Department of Corrections; and the Bermuda Addictions Certification Board.

The BACB will sponsor an award ceremony for abuse professional of the year, where individuals who provide outstanding care and support in the field of substance abuse treatment will be honoured.

The committee will also hold a recovery barbecue fun day, where people who have embraced recovery will be celebrated and acknowledged for their strength and perseverance.

An event featuring bowling and karaoke is also planned to honour those receiving treatment services.

The Department of Corrections will mark Recovery Month with multiple events, which include a barbecue picnic to honour residents of the Right Living House, including those who supported them and those who previously resided at the facility.

Later this month, the corrections department will host a graduation ceremony for inmates who have displayed commitment to positive change through substance abuse recovery and rehabilitation.

The government spokesman said that National Recovery Month served as a reminder that people can and do recover, with the right treatment, support and resources.

It specifically recognises individuals who are overcoming challenges related to substance use disorders and honours the resilience of individuals and families on the journey.

The Government provides treatment for people in need through the Nelson Bascome Substance Abuse Treatment Centre in St George’s.

The facility offers residential and outpatient programmes for residents who are struggling with drug and alcohol dependence, as well as access to a network of prevention and recovery services across the island.
