Nahki Wells holds out hope for World Cup

Nahki Wells believes it is too early to write off Bermuda’s 2026 World Cup hopes despite starting the final round of qualifiers on the back foot.

The Gombey Warriors sit bottom of group B after a 4-0 defeat by Jamaica and a 3-2 loss to Curaçao, with their chances of reaching the biggest stage in global football looking slim.

However, team captain Wells is refusing to throw the towel in just yet and is adamant he and his fellow team-mates can turn around their flagging fortunes and get the qualifying campaign on track.

“I still think there's a chance to qualify,” Wells told The Royal Gazette.

“Of course now we've given ourselves a real uphill task not having picked up any points from our first two fixtures against the two best sides in the group. But we still have to be aware that if we aren't to win the group, two of the second-best teams have a chance, so that's still an element of something to play for.

“But let's not be deluded that it's not going to be really, really tough from here. We just have to accept that and look to take maximum points from the next Fifa window.”

Bermuda did well to erase a 2-0 deficit away to Curaçao on Tuesday night before ultimately coming up short.

The result was a bitter pill for Wells to swallow.

“I think the Curaçao loss was a hard one and equally they probably feel that it could've been a much comfortable game for them having been 2-0 up and having full control because we had a really poor start,” he said.

“We kind of hit them on the back of nothing, really, in terms of two fine moments of quality from us. Probably poor defending from them and we found ourselves back in the game.

“We were just trying to pinch the win on the counter; try and stay solid as a team and hit them where it hurts on the counter. But we weren't able to do that and conceded, and they probably should've had a few more in the game whereas we weren't able to create enough to really say that.

“We should've took something from the game. We gave it our all right up to the last seconds of the game and it wasn't to be.”

The Luton Town striker feels there are both “positives and negatives” that Bermuda can take away from the match.

One particular cause of concern Wells expressed was the defensive display against Jamaica playing in front of the their own fans at Flora Duffy Stadium and away to Curaçao .

“We're a bit too easy to play against in regards to the chances that teams are creating against us,” he said. “I always try and look from my perspective as a forward and feel as if it would be very easy to get opportunities against us — that's something we need to be better at as a team.

“It’s not just individually, it's not just the back four; it’s the entire team. We are little bit too easy to carve open, and teams have found it too easy to create big moments against us. We haven't had the joy against the opposition often enough to get plenty of opportunities for ourselves.”

Meanwhile, Wells is expected to be included in Luton’s squad today for a Sky Bet League One fixture at home to Plymouth Argyle.

The 35-year-old hopes to hold his end of the deal and open his account should he get on to the pitch at Kenilworth Road.

“I am just looking to make some kind of impact and hopefully get up and running in terms of goals and start climbing the League One table, he said. “Start challenging and chasing the sides that's at the top of the division, which I don't have any doubts we can do.”

Luton are seventh in the standings, having taken 12 points from six league fixtures to date.
