Devonshire Colts pick up win but miss out on semi-final
X-Roads 0 Devonshire Colts 3
Substitute Chemarl Henry was involved in all three goals as Devonshire Colts beat X-Roads in the Dudley Eve Trophy at Devonshire Recreation Club on Tuesday night.
Victory was too little too late for Colts, who failed to make it through to the semi-finals as the best runner-up among the three groups after losing their opening game in the competition to St George’s last week.
Both X-Roads and Colts struggled to assert control in a sloppy first half that produced few clear opportunities and lacked quality.
Colts made the first dangerous chance when Zuhri Burgess stung the palms of X-Roads goalkeeper Kamran Harvey after the side in purple and black failed to clear their lines. A few minutes later, Colts’ Keino Burch slipped in Senoj Mitchell, who fired wide after taking a loose touch.
X-Roads had their best opening midway through the first half, with Tymon Daniels clipping a ball into Donavan Thompson, but the striker headed straight at Colts keeper Jaden Mills-Furbert.
Colts struggled to play out from the back, giving the ball away on numerous occasions as Warriors pressed them aggressively. However, Warriors were unable to create any more clear chances due to a lack of conviction in the final third.
Jomei Bean-Lindo brought some additional composure to a hectic Colts midfield after being introduced at half time.
After a few minutes of play in the second half Henry replaced Burch and he made an instant impact after his introduction. Showing good skill to beat Warriors defender Tyler Dill, the forward clipped a ball square for Mitchell, who glanced home past Harvey.
Colts continued to press for the second goal but poor decision-making in the final third prevented them from getting that cushion quickly. They did eventually find a second goal in the 71st minute after a moment of individual quality.
Henry weaved through the Warriors defence inside the penalty area before slotting home past Harvey.
Warriors showed courage and continued to show fight but colts put their determined opponents to bed in the second minute of added time, when Henry showed perseverance to outmuscle Christian Smith and square for fellow substitute Elisha Darrell to sidefoot past Harvey.
