Simmons and Roach primed for Mexican fights

Taking over Mexico: Adrian Roach and Saunder “Dash” Simmons are in action tonight (Photograph supplied)

Bermudian boxers Saundre “Dash” Simmons and Adrian Roach are geared up for their fights against Mexican opponents in Mexicali tonight.

Simmons, who is looking to extend his flawless record (8-0), takes on Juan Andres Alaniz Diaz. Roach is squaring off against Victor Emanuel Lopez in his maiden overseas pro fight.

Speaking as he shed off a few pounds in preparation for the weigh-in, Simmons said that it was all systems go for the fight in the Baja California province.

“We're ready to go and we're ready to take over,” Simmons told The Royal Gazette.

“It'll be my ninth fight and my chances of getting the victory, I guess they’re 100 per cent. I travelled to the other side of America so it’s going to be my ninth win as I’m always focused on winning.

“I don't really have nerves. I feel like I had a good preparation. It’s a short-notice fight but I'm always prepared. This is what I'm meant to do, it's God-given so when God says you do something, you do it.

“Adrian and I stay active, we stay in the gym and it's a year-round thing for us. I don't just get ready for fights, I stay ready for fights.

“Getting this short notice wasn't anything. It was just another day in the office for us.”

“I’m not only looking to be 10-0 by the end of the year. I'm also looking for an intercontinental belt, either with the IBF or the WBA. I'm not 100 per cent sure yet.

“The fans can expect fireworks. I don't just like boxing, I like fighting so I'm going for the guy's head. If the knockout comes, it comes. If not, it's still going to be fireworks.”

After knocking out Canadian Brent Coxworthy in his pro debut at The Shed, Dockyard, in July, Roach is aware that he cannot fumble the Mexican opportunity.

“It's a super important fight for me and I can’t mess it up,” the 23-year-old welterweight said.

“I took it on short notice and it’s my first international pro fight. I came here. I'm in his backyard so I can't get this one wrong.

“I'm very confident in my skills, in my team's preparation and in the team that I'm on here with.”

Roach is determined to make it as a pro, drawing inspiration from Simmons, Andre Lambe, Tyler Christopher and Nikki Bascome.

“I'm getting that second pro fight overseas, following in the footsteps of guys like Dash, guys like Andre,” he said.

“I can't wait for anybody in my career, boxing is a very limited sport and it’s hard on the body.

“I’m trying to get in and out while I'm young. I'm not in a rush but at the same time I'm not going to wait for events in Bermuda.

“I'm going to make sure that I make it happen elsewhere as well so I can climb the ranks and put Bermuda on the map even more soon because we've got guys like Andre, Dash, Tyler and Nikki.

“Everybody's making their way to the pro scene and getting some international recognition, so I'm just trying to be the next.”

The 28-year-old Simmons did not get much on the Mexican because of the late change leading up to the bout but his focus is firmly on his strategy.

“They had to shift around opponents a couple of times because we had people sign the contract and then one guy's medicals weren't in order,” the light-heavyweight said.

“We then had someone else sign the contract and he was complaining about the weight so right now I'm on my sixth appointment.

“My coach already did the scouting, laid out a game plan for me and that's just what I’ll follow.”

Roach believes his amateur career has prepared him to face opponents such as Lopez.

“My opponent is just big and really aggressive but that's not something I haven't seen before,” Roach said.

“Credit to my amateur career. I've had a lot of guys in the amateurs. I had over 40 fights and that kind of prides me for moments like this.

“You get guys last minute. Sometimes with amateurs, you don't know who you're fighting until the day of the fight. That's why an amateur career is so important.”
