Measures proposed to block run-off from farm

The Government is seeking a contractor to help prevent waste from a Smith’s dairy farm soiling a nearby stretch of the Railway Trail.

A request for quotations, published on the government procurement website, said: “The Green Land dairy farm in Smith’s Parish sits on land that drains downslope into the Railway Trail and nearby residential properties.

“A contractor is required to install a series of stone barriers and soakaways north of the cow shed to capture, slow and filter run-off before it reaches the Railway Trail.”

The notice added that the objective of the project would be to stop the run-off using “simple, durable methods” that provide a cost-effective and easy-to-maintain long-term solution.

Included documents proposed the construction of three dry-rubble stone barriers located 80ft, 65ft and 50ft south of the Railway Trail with soakaways, or infiltration pits, installed between them.

The project would also involve “draining adjustments” between the barriers to spread out water and direct it towards the soakaways.

All of the works should be completed within two months of the contractor receiving notice to move forward.

The deadline for submissions is 3pm on October 22.

Neighbours have repeatedly complained about unpleasant smells and spillage of waste from Green Land Farm.

Residents have also complained about waste from the farm washing down on to the Railway Trail.

A government spokeswoman said last month that representatives from the Ministry of Health had met the farm’s owner to develop a plan aimed at maintaining and enhancing milk quality standards.

It came after tests conducted by health officials and the issuance of a notice of temporary suspension to the farm over the quality of milk produced.

The government spokeswoman said in September: “Green Land dairy farm has since been confirmed to be in full compliance with all applicable health and safety regulations.

“While it is never the ministry’s intention to disrupt the operations of small businesses, our foremost responsibility is to safeguard public health.

“The Ministry of Health will continue to work with the team at Green Land dairy farm to ensure continued compliance and help maintain reliable food safety standards.”
