A local charity has urged residents to make eye care a top priority.

Vision Bermuda issued the call for World Sight Day, which will be observed globally today under the theme “Love your eyes”.

Erica Ingemann, the executive director of Vision Bermuda, highlighted the importance of a “people-centred approach” to eye health.

She said: “Individuals should always be at the core of everything we do. There is simply no other philosophy.

“The person comes first; everything else falls into place after. We are here to see you, to support you and to be your eyes when you need us most.”

Ms Ingemann urged residents to take their eye health seriously.

She said: “Parents, please get your children’s eyes tested and follow all recommendations.

“Adults, make your own eye care a priority, and please, do not let finances stop you from seeking the help you need.

“Come and talk to us — together, we’ll find a way. Love your eyes and let them remind you of all there is to love in you.”

The charity will mark the day with an open house from 11am to 3pm at its Beacon House site on the corner of Cedar Avenue and Dundonald Street in Hamilton.

Visitors will be able to explore Vision Bermuda’s headquarters, designed with visual impairments in mind, and learn about the wide range of services, support and resources available to individuals living with sight loss.

People will be able to take part in interactive experiences offering a brief, “eye-opening glimpse” into the world of visual impairment.

Visitors can also purchase adaptive equipment designed to enhance independence and quality of life.

Theresa McMordie, Vision Bermuda’s vision rehabilitation specialist, will be on site to demonstrate equipment and answer questions about programmes and services.

Ms McMordie said: “Every day at Vision Bermuda, I see the strength and resilience of people living with sight loss.

“World Sight Day is not just about raising awareness of eye health. It’s about reminding our community that with the right support, no one has to walk this journey alone.

“For me, it’s a privilege to help people rediscover independence, confidence and joy in their lives.”
