The island has won praise from a jurisdiction to its south for the success of its transportation system.

Drexwell Seymour, a certified public accountant and public figure in the Turks & Caicos Islands, also highlighted the strict policies in Bermuda regarding rentals and vehicle ownership.

Writing in the TCI Sun, Mr Seymour said the Government of Bermuda oversaw an “organised” public transportation system comprising 11 bus routes and four ferry routes.

He added: “Notably, visitors to Bermuda cannot rent or drive private cars. Tourists can rent scooters or electric vehicles.

“Tourists are advised to utilise public transportation, taxis and bicycles.”

He said: “One takeaway from Bermuda is its commitment to building an effective public transport system.

“Bermuda’s public buses and ferries run on regular schedules and affordable fares.”

Mr Seymour called on the TCI Government to invest in a public transport system that could “drastically improve access for residents without cars and hopefully eliminate the illegal jitneys”, a term for illegal cabs.

He suggested that the TCI Government consider a coastal commuter ferry or a water taxi system to transport residents from different areas on the main island of Providenciales to relieve road congestion.

Since Bermuda caps the number and size of vehicles allowed, he said the TCI could introduce import limits or progressive fees to discourage excessive ownership.

He said: “We can also consider a cap on the number of vehicles per household. Perhaps, the maximum can be two vehicles per household.”

Mr Seymour said while Bermuda has had systems fundamental to its transport sector for more than 70 years, it may be a challenge for the TCI to adapt to any recommended changes.

He said: “However, we need to start somewhere — and implementing measures such as controlled vehicle imports, structured ferry service and expanded public transport can help us to manage the growing traffic.”
