Duchess marks visit with tree planting
Birgitte, the Duchess of Gloucester, got a taste of Bermudian produce along with the island’s culture during her last day on the island.
The Duchess was joined by Andrew Murdoch, the Governor, and Lieutenant-Colonel Duncan Simons, Commanding Officer of the Royal Bermuda Regiment, as two Cuban royal palm trees were planted on the Government House grounds overlooking the North Shore.
The Duchess tasted a grapefruit from one of the property’s many fruit trees and chatted with staff from the Department of Parks during the ceremony.
One tree was planted to commemorate the Duchess’s visit and the other in recognition of Mr Murdoch.
About 15 dancers and six drummers from H & H Gombey Troupe also performed for the Duchess at Government House.
The troupe wowed spectators during the Gombey Festival and one member showed the Duchess the regalia of his decorative cape.
The Duchess has visited places such as the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences and Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art and addressed the RBR since arriving on the island on Thursday. The Duchess flew back to Britain this evening.
