Plans put forward for Fort Prospect gun range
A portion of the moat surrounding Fort Prospect could be turned into a firing range for the Bermuda Police Service.
A recent planning application proposed work at the historic fort in Devonshire to create a fenced-in firing range in the northeastern portion of the site’s moat.
Drawings included in the application show storage containers and a bullet catch, along with 100-yard, 50-metre and 25-metre shooting points.
In 2017, the Bermuda Police Service put out an invitation for tender to turn a portion of Fort Prospect into a new gun range with work including “excavation, grading, concrete works, trenching, foundations, roofing and installation of a bullet trap and baffle system”.
A government spokeswoman said at the time the new range would replace the one at Cooper’s Island.
Fort Prospect was built by 1870, but was considered obsolete soon after it was completed. Much of the site was subsequently converted into a water reservoir.
