Paget issue statement after assault on player
Paget Lions have released a statement after one of their players was chased by a group of men armed with knives at Southampton Oval on Sunday afternoon.
The incident occurred just before the start of the game with the Bermuda Police Service attending the game after the perpetrators had left the vicinity.
In the statement, Paget are keen to point out that they consider the attack was unprovoked, in contrast to the claims made by Southampton Rangers president Darren “Butch” Burchall.
“During our recent match an unfortunate and unforeseen incident disrupted what was meant to be an enjoyable and competitive game,” the statement read.
“We want to make it clear the individuals who entered the field and carried out the unprovoked attack on one of our players were in no way associated with our team. As a result, the game had to be cancelled in the interest of everyone’s safety.”
It goes on to say that Paget are taking action to ensure that something similar does not occur at one of their games in the future.
“We deeply regret any stress or inconvenience caused to our fans and attendees” it said.
“Your safety and enjoyment are always our top priorities. We are ensuring that appropriate measures are taken and that such an incident does not occur again.
“To our supporters, sponsors and the broader community, thank you for your concern, your patience and your continued trust in our club. We remain committed to maintaining a safe, respectful and competitive atmosphere both on and off the field.
“Thank you for standing with us.”
