Residents in areas around the Marsh Folly composting facility were warned today that they might notice foul smells later this month.

The Ministry of Public Works is to carry out its biannual disposal of septage waste during the week beginning October 26.

A spokesman said: “These operations may result in unpleasant odours being experienced in the residential areas surrounding the Marsh Folly composting facility.

“Despite this, the ministry assures there is no environmental risk to area residents.”

He added: “The Tynes Bay Septage Receiving Facility collects residential and commercial cesspit waste from around the island.

“Every six months, the facility is required to remove these waste solids and transport them to Marsh Folly.

“The ministry uses the best health and safety, and environmental practices while executing these procedures.”

The ministry apologised in advance for any foul smells that may arise and thanked the public for their patience while the work is carried out.
