Warwick Academy brings Broadway hit to Bermuda
Warwick Academy is going blonde this week as it prepares for its next musical performance.
Students at the school will stage Legally Blonde tonight, tomorrow and Saturday with the show’s young cast promising a memorable night with humour and music.
Inspired by the hit 2001 comedy starring Reese Witherspoon, the musical production of Legally Blonde became a hit in its own right since its debut in 2007.
The show follows the character of Elle Woods, a sorority girl who goes to Harvard Law School to try to win back her boyfriend, Warner Huntington III.
However, Florence Russell, who stars as Elle in the Warwick Academy production, said the heart of the show was Elle’s journey of self discovery.
She said: “The show is very upbeat, very funny and there are so many songs that are very catchy. The songs are the heavier parts of the material but the show is just so fun.”
Florence said that while she had seen the original film, she had not gone back to it since being cast in the leading role.
She added: “I think it’s going to be a really fun show. There are not many opportunities to see a musical like this on the island.
“Everyone in the cast and crew is just amazing and everyone is working so hard to make this the best show possible.
Zion Mills, who plays Warner, first heard about Legally Blonde from its Broadway production and has grown to love the story and its characters.
“It’s a fun story. I like all the songs and it is really funny. I’m very excited about people seeing it on opening night. We have a really talented cast and we are putting a lot of time into it.
“Rehearsals are going well so far. It’s getting a bit sad now because we are getting close to the end.”
He added that even those who are familiar with the Broadway production would see something new, including an elaborate jump rope scene, which he helped choreograph.
Ailie Waddington, who is co-directing the production and acting as love interest Emmett Forrest, said he had campaigned unsuccessfully for the musical to be performed last year but was able to make it a reality this year as drama leader.
He said: “It’s hailed as one of the best musical adaptations from film that has ever been on Broadway with its songs and its changes to the story.
“People should come because it’s something different from a lot of shows. It’s very fun.
“It’s definitely a lot of pink but the core message is about discovering who you are and looking beyond your appearance.”
Ailie added that it was sometimes a challenge to balance working on stage and off but he had been able to use his familiarity with the show to help guide the process.
“I am good friends with everyone on the cast so it goes pretty smoothly most times,” he said.
The Warwick Academy production of Legally Blonde will be performed at 7pm tonight and tomorrow, with a 2pm matinee performance on Saturday.
Tickets are available for $25 at ptix.bm.
