Jorgia White adds to list of swimming record breakers
Teenager Jorgia White became the third member of Bermuda’s swimming community to break a record at the Bermuda Amateur Swimming Association’s Winter Age Group Championships.
White broke the 17-18 age group record in the 1,500 metres freestyle record set by Stephanie Myles in 2009, lowering the previous best mark of 18min 37.38sec by more than a second when stopping the clock at 18min 35.90sec.
It was also a successful meet for Elanna Fulton, Colette Durkin and Axel Wernbo, who all hit the qualifying times needed in their respective age groups for the 2026 Carifta Championships, which will be held in Martinique in April.
White, helped by her record-breaking performance, was crowned the 15 and over female champion with 3,319 points, beating Marleigh Howes (3,195) and Lila Connolly (2,895).
Logan Jones came out on top among the 15 and over males, racking up 3,444 points to edge out Noah Fulton (2,829) and Joseph Lau (2,768).
Etham Smith and Isla Cooze took top honours in the 13 and 14 age group. Smith finished with 2,573 points, pushing Jacob Leclerc (2,469) into second and Thomas Twiley (1,405) into third. Cooze scored 2,529 points to beat Zara Bule (2,321) and Sofia Leclerc (2,285).
Durkin was successful in the 11-12 female age group with 2,501 points ahead of Madison Fox (2,233) and Evelyn Fahy (2,148). Maxwell Williams was the leading boy in the same age group with 1,488 points. He beat Walker Smith (1,484) and Kanyon Armstrong (1,176).
Myla Desjardins and Niklas Bock were the youngest champions at the meet in the 10 and under division.
Desjardins (1,206) beat Willa Wright (967) and Aine Fahy (919) with Bock (924) besting Joseph Herron (224).
The two best individual performances at the event came from Marleigh Howes, who picked up 616 points in the 100 metres freestyle, with Thomas Cechini scoring 694 points in the 400 freestyle.
