All eyes on brewing title race
What is shaping up to be another tight Premier Division title race continues this weekend with leaders Dandy Town and fellow contenders X-Roads doing battle in an intriguing top-of-the table clash at St David’s tomorrow.
As it stands, there are six teams in contention for the title with a mere point separating Hornets from fifth-placed X-Roads, with Devonshire Cougars also in the mix a point farther back.
Hornets coach Jarreau Hayward said his team will have to be at their best if they are to come away with a favourable result.
“It's our first time playing X-Roads, but I have seen them play several times,” he told The Royal Gazette.
“I really like what they are doing there, so we will have to be at our best. They present a very unique challenge that we look forward to meeting.
“Sunday's match is a final for us, just like every other match. Training has been very positive this week, and I just love and appreciate how the boys are growing individually and collectively. This is another opportunity for us to evolve, so we are looking forward to that.”
Hornets could very well relinquish their lead before even taking to the pitch as third and fourth-place PHC Zebras and Devonshire Colts, who are among four teams level on 12 points — including champions North Village — are in action today.
Zebras are away to Paget at White Hill Field while Colts host bottom side Boulevard at Police Field.
Colts’s title hopes suffered a setback after losing 2-0 to PHC last time out but are hoping for better fortunes this time around.
“We need to bounce back from last week’s disappointing result,” Colts coach Ray Jones said.
“Last week I thought we was rusty from a long layoff, so hopefully this week we can get our rhythm back.”
Village appear to have finally overcome a poor start to the season and will likewise be keen to make further inroads in the title race away to Young Men’s Social Club, the other team in the relegation zone, at Police Field tomorrow.
Like Town, Village are also approaching the fixture as a final.
“Sunday’s match is another game we must take seriously,” coach Cal Dill Jr said. “We have to play every game as though it’s a final.”
As for his team’s good form of late, Dill added: “Our revival has come from the hard work the players are putting into their training, the culture of North Village and also understanding their roles in the team.”
Cougars are also hoping to stay in the hunt away to St George’s Colts at Wellington Oval in a repeat of the Dudley Eve Trophy final last month.
The teams experienced mixed fortunes in their previous league outings, with Cougars edging Paget 2-1 and St George’s being on the wrong end of a humbling 4-1 loss to Village.
First Division action also continues this weekend.
As it stands, Somerset Trojans top the table on goal difference from Robin Hood, with the pair holding a six-point advantage over Southampton Rangers.
Trojans, the only unbeaten team in the division, can take sole possession of the lead with victory away to bottom side Vasco at Police Field tomorrow, as Hood have a bye this round.
Tomorrow’s remaining second-tier fixtures will see St David’s hosting Rangers and Somerset Eagles doing battle with Wolves at White Hill Field.
