Bermuda capital is ‘North America’s priciest city’

Idyllic British Overseas Territory: a SoyNómada image illustrates the website’s finding that Bermuda makes even the notoriously expensive Manhattan look like a relative bargain

Bermuda has made a splash on another travel website — and it is not good news.

SoyNómada is the travel website for digital nomads and world travellers, it says, providing information on a number of things, including destinations and guides to saving on flights, accommodation, equipment and technology.

The headline to the article says it all: “Move over Manhattan: Why tiny Hamilton, Bermuda is North America’s true priciest city”.

The article makes a case for Bermuda being a part of the Americas: “Technically speaking, due to its position on the North American continental shelf, it is considered a part of North America, despite being entirely unconnected to the mainland.”

The numbers do not lie about Bermuda’s astronomical costs, states author Luciano Astrada: “Let’s cut straight to the undeniable, hard facts. Using a comparative cost-of-living index where New York City is assigned a baseline score of 100, Bermuda shockingly scored at 126.34.

“This means that the general cost of living in Bermuda is more than a quarter higher than in New York City, which itself is globally recognised as notoriously expensive.”

Switzerland, second on the list and trailing significantly behind at 90.68 even with its high cost of goods and services, “simply doesn’t even come close to Bermuda’s unparalleled expense”.

“The idyllic British Overseas Territory”, the article says, famous for its mesmerising pink sand beaches and charming pastel-coloured houses, outranks every US city “when it comes to the sheer cost of living”.

It’s a “tropical” paradise with an “exceptionally hefty price tag” and a “staggering cost of existence”.
