Christmas tree retailers report good sales
Local Christmas tree retailers have reported a good season with many shipments now sold out or almost all gone.
Bermuda Green Thumb Nursery on Brighton Hill in Devonshire said sales had gone well, although they still had a few trees.
“It was our first time selling them,” said Eugene O’Connor, who runs the business with partner, Jay Benoza. “We have reduced the price on what we have left.”
MarketPlace helped them to bring in the trees and also gave them advice on marketing and other aspects of Christmas tree sales.
Mr O’Connor said things had gone well enough that they planned to continue selling Christmas trees next year.
He was also seeing steady traffic for poinsettias and other plants.
Bermuda Green Thumb staff found snow in the refrigerated containers brought in from Canada.
“My staff had a snowball fight with it,” Mr O’Connor said.
The Bermuda Brickyard also reported finding snow.
“We bring them in from the border of Canada and Vermont,” said office manager Sonia Whayman. “We brought in three containers, a total of 900 trees, and we have now sold out.”
She said it was controlled chaos on Mill Reach Lane in Pembroke for about two weeks.
“There were lines of people out there,” she said. “Everyone seemed to want that tree and not the other tree.”
They have been bringing in Christmas trees for charity for the past 13 years.
One year they found little birds’ nests in a shipment of the trees.
“They were cute,” she said. “We gave them to one little child who was here. She was going to put chocolates in them and put them in her Christmas tree for Santa.”
In previous years, Christmas trees have looked ragged after being heavily sprayed by the Bermuda Department of Environment & Natural Resources.
This year, Aberfeldy Nurseries in Paget had no problems with their trees.
“Everything has looked fresh and green,” a spokesman for the firm said. “Christmas tree sales have been very successful this year. Now things have slowed down. We have a few left, but not many.”
Their poinsettias and Christmas cactus were also moving well.
