Bragging rights at stake for Wells and Trott

Luton Town striker Nahki Wells has a score to settle with compatriot Nathan Trott heading into his team’s League One clash away with the latter’s Cardiff City at Cardiff City Stadium today.

Trott came away from the first league encounter between the teams with bragging rights after leaders Bluebirds prevailed 1-0 at Kenilworth Road last August. The Bermudian goalkeeper played an integral role between the posts in the visitors’ success.

“Nathan got the better of me that day. They beat us and he had an outstanding game,” Wells told The Royal Gazette.

“It was one of the best performances I’ve seen from a keeper against us. He was never going to concede and it was just one of those days.

“He’s one-nil up on me at the moment and I would love to change that on Saturday. I’m looking forward to it and just hoping that we can put on a really good performance.”

Rivalries aside, Wells has a lot of admiration for his fellow Bermudian, who is on loan with Cardiff from Danish Superliga outfit Copenhagen.

“I am a big fan of Nathan. We don’t know each other too well on a personal level, obviously him being kind of the generation behind me and not necessarily having too many people in common,” he said.

“I only got the chance to meet him a few times, but have been in contact with him and [I’m] very supportive of his career. I had the luxury of meeting his father in recent times as well.

“I wish him all the very best because I believe he’s going to carry the flag for the next ten years beyond my time as a footballer.

“He is a top, top talent and without a doubt one of the best, not just in League One, but in the Football League as a whole in my opinion.”

Leaders Cardiff remain two points ahead of fellow title hopefuls Lincoln City at the summit, while seventh place Luton are four points adrift of the play-off positions.

Both teams are coming off victories heading into the clash, with Trott keeping a clean sheet in the Bluebirds convincing 3-0 demolition of Rotherham United, despite playing most of the match with ten men after defensive midfielder Ryan Wintle was shown a red card in the 21st minute.

Luton edged Wells’ former club Bradford City 2-1, with the Bermuda striker entering the fray in the 77th minute with the Hatters clinging to a two-goal cushion before the visiting side pulled one back in second-half stoppage time to set up a nervy finish.

Luton have gone unbeaten in their last ten matches at home and Wells is now hoping they can produce the same form on the road.

“We have been fantastic at home and hopefully we can kind of replicate some of our home performances because we look near enough unbeatable at home and the complete opposite away from home,” he said.

“We will put real emphasis on trying to change that and what better test than playing against the league leaders in Cardiff.

“I think we will thrive against the better sides, Cardiff obviously being that for sure, and it’s an away game.”

Very little separated the teams in their first league encounter and Wells anticipates today’s clash will be just as evenly fought.

“I am thoroughly expecting a tough task, especially with Nathan in goal and up against a really good side,” the 35-year-old said.

“We will see how that one goes and I’ll be trying to make it 1-1 because right now he’s one-nil up on me.”
