Nahki Wells backs Nathan Trott to reach Premier League
Nahki Wells has no doubts fellow Bermudian Nathan Trott can thrive in the Sky Bet Championship with promoted Cardiff City next season.
The Bluebirds sealed automatic promotion with three games to spare, with Player of the Season nominee Trott excelling in goal.
The 27-year-old kept 16 clean sheets, including a club-record five in his first five league appearances, and Luton Town striker Wells believes he can be just as effective in English football’s second tier next season.
“I am happy for Nathan and have no doubts of him doing well at this level and potentially getting to the Premier League in the next couple of years,” Wells told The Royal Gazette.
“I’m certain that he will be able to produce the same outstanding performances as consistent as he did last season in the Championship and hopefully he can be the next Bermudian playing in the Premier League, so fingers crossed for him.
“I am a big admirer of him and his abilities as a goalkeeper. He’s had an outstanding year and for me is the best goalkeeper in the league.”
Trott joined Cardiff on a season-long loan from Danish Superliga champions FC Copenhagen last summer after agreeing to a deal which gave the Welsh club an option to sign him permanently should they achieve promotion back to the Championship.
The Bluebirds recently took up that option with former West Ham academy player Trott agreeing to the terms of an undisclosed three-year deal believed to be £1.5 million, which will run until the summer of 2029.
“It’s a really good step for them to sign Nathan permanently and I have no doubts he’s going to go to have an excellent career in England,” Wells said.
“He’s an outstanding keeper who will probably find it easier the higher he goes, so credit to him.
“I wish him nothing but the best and I will be following his career as he goes along.”
Cardiff finished runners-up in League One to Lincoln City to secure the remaining automatic promotion spot.
“I don’t like to give Cardiff too much credit, having been a rival of theirs for the last six years, but fair play to them,” Wells said.
“They were thoroughly deserving of promotion and I feel they will be able to compete in the Championship next season if they are able to keep their manager and their best players.”
Luton finished seventh, missing out on the promotion play-offs by one point.
