A Liberian container ship diverted briefly to the island last week to help a crew member who received treatment for a partially severed finger.

An incident report from the Department of Marine and Ports Services said that on February 18, the Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre was contacted by the captain of the M/V Al Manamah, which was travelling to Belgium from Norfolk, Virginia.

The captain said that the ship wished to divert to the island “at best speed” to transfer a crew member who had suffered a serious hand injury on board.

The ship reached Bermudian waters on Thursday morning and the crew member, a 26-year-old Philippine national, was safely transferred to Ordnance Island, St George’s on the pilot boat St George.

He was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment.
