Breathtaking scenery and a peaceful hotel

Pompano Beach Club, situated on Bermuda's South Shore, is so beautiful that it is almost mystical. From the moment you enter the very long entrance until you arrive and look at the view you may feel slightly spellbound. You hear the sound of the wind as it drifts in from the turquoise sea and you feel the warmth of the sun.

"This is the perfect place for romantic couples or families who wish to gather and enjoy quiet beauty overlooking our shallow sandbar - the only one of its kind in Bermuda and described as the 'best underwater beach in the world'," said general manger, Larry Lamb.

This family owned resort features elegant cottage-like facilities with magnificent ocean views. At low tide, you can wade out over 250 yards from their pink sand beach and snorkel the brilliant coral reefs.

Pompano has evolved over the years to be the lovely place that it is today. Mr. Lamb explained that in 1954 his Dad, a college senior who hailed from Boston, and his two best friends, both Bermudians, purchased 25 acres for $70,000 from Mr. Tudor. The area was known as Tudor Hill Farm.

After finishing college in 1954, Mr. Lamb and his two Bermudian friends established Bermuda's first fishing club. People would go out fishing and return to cook their fish and eventually a restaurant was built on the site.

"My Dad said people wanted to stay, so in 1956 thought was given to expansion. However, both my Dad's partners needed to sell. Dad was 23 when he was forced to buy out his partners.

That was a busy time for Pompano as six guest rooms were built in fall of 1956, making it a fishing club, a restaurant and a hotel. Soon after, another eight rooms were built, and it kept evolving until about four years ago when it finished with 56 rooms on 14 acres. The remaining acreage was sold to create Port Royal Golf Course.

"We owned holes seven, eight, and nine out of that land and I am pleased to say that we have a wonderful relationship with the golf club and refer our guests there.

World Tennis Magazine said of the resort: "Cliffside setting and breathtaking sea views are unbeatable; proximity to Port Royal golf course make the place a natural for golfers".

Pompano offers everything to its clients from golf and tennis to an extensive variety of watersports on-site. You can rent a sailboat, windsurf, paddle boat or kayak and explore their shallow waterfront. After a day of fun and adventure you can relax at their cocktail lounge and poolside bar which offer an extensive selection of tropical drinks, while you listen to Bermudian entertainers perform six nights per week from April through November in their Foc's'le lounge.

Each evening a phenomenal group of chefs offer a wonderful five course meal. Each evening the menu varies. Dinner costs $49 and is served from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.. The dress code is smart casual. Lunch on the terrace is very inviting and is served from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. offering gourmet salads, sandwiches and other dishes.

Mr. Lamb said: "You can see some of the prettiest sunsets on the Island from our vantage point - they are just incredibly beautiful. Observing beauty and developing a positive rapport with people is part of my role here. This line of work is the worst job in the world for hours but I love it and I can't imagine doing anything else."

If you are seeking a getaway, Mr. Lamb said that he offers a 'Bermuda Resident Rate' all year round. The rate for a couple per night is $450 for a superior room during October but they take half the price off the rate for locals if they have available space.

"We offer the service and facilities of a large hotel with the charm and intimacy of a seaside inn. It matters that our guests are happy," concluded Mr. Lamb.
