The battle for honours in tomorrow’s RenaissanceRe 5/10 Mile Challenge promises to be an exciting one with past winner Sean Trott, Kallan Richardson and Dennis Mbelenzi among the field in the longer event.

Kenya-born runner Mbelenzi is fresh off victory in last weekend’s Ed Sherlock 8K in the absence of Trott and Richardson, who opted not to compete in the rescheduled race honouring the remarkable legacy of the six-time Bermuda Half Marathon Derby champion.

Trott, whose sole victory to date arrived three years ago and has also finished runner-up four times, is using tomorrow’s race as a warm up for his Bermuda Half Marathon Derby title defence next month.

“The 10-mile race Sunday is usually my last big test before May 24, so I’ll look to run hopefully faster than last year,” he told The Royal Gazette.

“Last year I did a 54.52 so anything faster than that is what I’d be happy with, and hopefully that should get me close to the front.

“I’ve been first once and four times second, but every year I’ve gotten faster the last three years, so [the] races had good results for me despite not having the win.”

A new champion will be crowned this year as Jake Brislane, last year’s winner, is not back to defend his title.

Among those expected to be challenging for women’s honours in the 10-mile race are last year’s winner Christine Dailey and Stepanka Sprincova, who won her age group and was second overall in the women’s division in the Ed Sherlock 8K.

New champions will also be crowned in the five-mile race as last year’s winner Marquis Burgess is not defending his crown while Sprincova is competing in the 10-mile race.

The 10-mile course starts next to Botanical Gardens on South Shore Road in Devonshire and proceeds east to the turnaround shortly after the junction with Paynters Road in Smith’s before returning via the same route and finishing at the “Lagoon” property directly opposite Botanical Gardens.

The five-mile race starts next to Botanical Gardens and proceeds east to the turnaround at Spittal Pond before returning via the same route and also finish at the “Lagoon” property.

The five-mile race starts at 8.30am, with the 10-mile race beginning at 8.35am.
