FC Bascome beat North Village in under-18 final
FC Bascome 4 North Village 1
Tomorrow’s stars shone bright on Sunday as FC Bascome’s U18s played to an entertaining final win over North Village with both teams displaying high-quality passing, brisk ball movement and attacking prowess.
However, it was FC Bascome who controlled the pace of the match from the opening whistle, creating numerous goalscoring opportunities throughout the game.
The match started brightly and Bascome took the lead in the tenth minute when Village conceded a foul deep in their defence. The low cross was allowed to roll through a maze of players to the back post, where Christian Piney slid the ball into the net despite a last-ditch effort from Village’s standout goalkeeper Aiden Jones.
Bascome doubled their lead in the seventeenth minute when goalscorer Piney became provider as he looped a cross over Jones’ head for Rajae Knight-Rowling to easily sidefoot into the exposed left corner.
Goalkeeper Jones kept his team in the match with back-to-back saves from a long drive by Ramsay Sutter and Knight-Rowling, who had picked up the rebound as Bascome took only a 2-0 lead into the half despite their dominance.
Village came out in the second half a more determined team, with Bascome showing signs of complacency. They reduced the deficit by one when Norico Furbert robbed Kydan Browne in the defensive third and he kept his composure to plant a drive beyond Bascome’s goalkeeper Ethan Adderley, who was having a quiet game up until this point.
Nazri Daley’s drive from long range then skimmed the crossbar and went over as Village picked up the tempo in search of an equaliser.
But in the 86th minute, Rylan DeSilva extended Bascome’s lead with the goal of the game. After picking up the ball in the middle of the park, he unleashed a thunderbolt which rattled the roof of the net beyond the outstretched arms of the diving Village goalkeeper.
Isai Gibbons would close out the scoring with the last kick of the game when he was left unmarked at the back post to unleash a piledriver, which beat the diving Jones for pace as it ricocheted off his body and into the roof of the net.
MVP honours for North Village went to goalkeeper Jones, who had an outstanding game to keep the scoreline respectable and giving his team a chance in the match. The award for Bascome was given to Christian Piney, who scored the opening goal and an assist to start the landslide for the winning team.
