Ryder Cup golf is coming to Ocean View Golf Course. Well, sort of.

The Government-owned golf course will provide the backdrop for the inaugural Carlsberg Ocean View Club that will pit two teams, one from each end of the island, against each other in a three-day Ryder Cup-style format featuring four-ball, foursomes and singles match play from May 1 to 3.

The East and West teams will be led by non-playing captains and consist of 24 players from last year’s Johnnie Walker Classic at Ocean View, which was won by professional Quinton Sherlock Jr.

OJ Pitcher, the Ocean View Golf Club head professional, is looking forward to what promises to be an exciting event at the Devonshire golf course.

“This is first time we are doing this to add another golfing event to our calendar and keep it attractive for local golfers” he told The Royal Gazette.

“The tournament will be held over three days and it will be morning tee times.

“In order to participate in this there was a qualification process and that process was taken from the Johnnie Walker overall results from last year.

“We divided into two teams and it will be a Ryder Cup format, East versus West, and that is based off the parish the players live in, from St George’s up to Devonshire for the East and Pembroke to Sandys for the West.

“There will be twelve players per team and we will be assigning a non-playing captain for the East and West teams.

“It’s never been done and was an idea that came up and everybody loved to it.”
