Legend Series heads for exciting climax

Kallan Richardson and Estienne Coetzee have extra incentive heading into tomorrow’s Sir Stanley Burgess 5K.

The pair are the current men’s and women’s leaders in the overall Swan’s Running Club Legend Series and will be hoping to seal the deal in the final race of the four-race series, which carries double points.

Richardson is facing stiff competition from Kenya-born runner Dennis Mbelenzi, who won last month’s Ed Sherlock 8K for the first time, while it remains to be seen if the defending Legend Series champion Sean Trott decides to show up on the start line.

Mbelenzi has dominated the local road running scene this season and is fresh from victory in last month’s RenaissanceRe 10 mile race, which he won convincingly.

Coetzee also has her work cut out among the women’s field coming up against the in form Maddie Durkin and Meghan Diel.

Durkin is high on confidence having claimed back-to-back honours in last month’s RenaissanceRe 10 mile race and inaugural Cambridge Classic 5/10K Challenge.

David Lunn is back to defend his Sir Stanley Burgess 5K title while a new women’s champion will be crowned this year as last year’s winner Gayle Lindsay no longer lives on island. Lindsay is also the reigning Legend Series women’s champion.

The series, which also includes the Ray San Flat 8K and Ludwig Cann 10K Road Race, offers participants the opportunity to battle it out for trophy honours, with the overall male and female winner pocketing $1,000 in prize money.

Runners must complete three out of the four races to be eligible to be crowned the Legends Series winner, with male and female winners in each age category also receiving a trophy.

Age group winners will also receive prizes with all Legend Series participants that complete three of the four races to receive a Legends T-shirt and commemorative medal.

The aim of the Legends Series is to celebrate Bermuda's race legends and to keep their contribution to running alive.
