Talented schoolchildren, jump ropers and fitness fans will join the campaign to remind people how important it is to keep active while living with asthma.

Open Airways said that an “informative and engaging” event will be held at City Hall for World Asthma Day on Tuesday.

The charity works to improve the health and wellbeing of people living with the condition and the annual observance highlights the challenges faced by those affected.

“This year, Open Airways is emphasising the importance of staying active with asthma, reinforcing the message that ‘active lungs are healthy lungs’,” a spokeswoman for the organisation said.

“The celebration promises to be both informative and engaging.

“Asthma educators will be on hand to answer questions and provide guidance to attendees seeking to better understand and manage their asthma.

“Pharmacists from CG Pharmacy will also be present to offer advice on medications and the correct use of spacers — an essential tool in effective asthma treatment.”

The spokeswoman added: “Schoolchildren from across the island will showcase their talents, while the Bermuda Jump Rope Federation will deliver an energetic demonstration.

“Fitness experts from Beyond Fitness Bermuda will lead an interactive exercise session, encouraging attendees to participate and experience how physical activity can be safely incorporated into daily life with asthma.”

Hamilton Town Crier Ed Christopher will open the observance, which will run from 11am to 1.30pm.

The Mayor of Hamilton Charles Gosling — in one of his last mayoral addresses — and Kim Wilson, the Minister of Health, will speak.

A performance by the Bermuda Islands Pipe Band will close the event.

Attendees who talk to asthma educators will receive a complimentary spacer and goody bag, while asthma patients who sign up for an hour-long consultation — to take place at a later date — will get a voucher for a free pillow from Masters Ltd.

Open Airways said that asthma affected about 8,000 people in Bermuda, or more than 12 per cent of the island’s population.

The charity concluded: “The event is free, open to the public and designed to foster a supportive, informed and active community.

“As Open Airways continues its mission to help Bermuda breathe better, this year’s World Asthma Day celebration serves as a reminder that with the right knowledge, tools and support, everyone can take control of their asthma and live life to the fullest.”
