Eviction deadline looms for Canadian Hotel residents

The eviction deadline is looming for residents at the Canadian Hotel, however it appears that few know where they are going after February 28.visited the hotel residence on Wednesday but many of the residents refused to speak to the media. Some said they had just come from a meeting with Bermuda Housing Corporation, but others said they had not been to a BHC meeting.understands that residents are being dealt with in a case by case fashion. It appears that some have been informed there is housing for them while others have not.

A resident would not confirm or deny that tenants are expected to have paid their rent in full before they will be assisted.

On February 1 it was announced that the hotel would have to close down because the owner, Thomas Powell, could not afford the $1.5 million cost of repairing and insuring the premises.

Since then suggestions about where to house the residents have come from both political parties but no firm decisions have been announced to the press, or it appears the residents.

Temporary housing in Southside and Warwick Camp have been mentioned, the public has also been asked to voluntarily house tenants for a short period.

In a rare bipartisan move both the UBP and PLP met with residents of the hotel on February 8.

Yesterday the Government's Department of Communications and Information was not able to say if a final plan has been made, or what it is if one has been made.

It appears, with four days until eviction that no one ? not even the tenants ? has firm answers as to where the 56 residents will live on March 1.
